Delivery driver received US$400 in BTC as tip

Bitcoin pizza story 2.0: Delivery driver received US$400 in BTC as tip

„I let the pizza delivery guy choose between US$5 in fiat or BTC. No need to add that he chose wisely,“ the redditor said.

A driver who received US$5 in Bitcoin (BTC) as a tip for a pizza delivery has spoken out again after seven years.

According to a post by Reddit user btcbible, the Bitcoiner ordered of Bitcoin Machine review a pizza on 28 December 2013 and gave the delivery driver two options for his tip: a US$5 note or 0.0069 BTC on a paper wallet. At the time, the crypto-asset’s price was US$774.

BTC is now worth

The driver reportedly contacted btcbible this week and asked for help moving the money to a hot wallet. Following Bitcoin’s recent surge to a new all-time high of more than US$58,000, BTC is now worth about US$400. That’s an increase of more than 7,000 per cent since the pizza was delivered.

„I let the pizza delivery guy choose between US$5 in fiat or BTC,“ btcbible said. „No need to add that he chose wisely. I responded with instructions on how to import the private key via Electrum.“

The Reddit user clarified that he was „not Bitcoin rich“ as he cashed out most of his assets last year to buy a house. The Reddit user said at the time that the driver had „heard about Bitcoin from the news and grasped the general concept of it“, but was „obviously still very new to it“.

The Reddit post recalls one of the most iconic stories in the crypto space from Bitcoin’s early days. The first documented commercial purchase using BTC was an order for two pizzas in May 2010, when a programmer paid 10,000 BTC (about $580 million today) to a Bitcoin Talk forum user to send him two pizzas from a Papa John’s outlet in the United States.
